The Olive Tart - Excellence Magazine #202

Last September I flew to Connecticut and spent a full day photographing and driving the "Olive Tart", a '71 911S rebuilt into a staggeringly detailed and accurate ST replica. It was a great day and this is one of my all time favorite early 911's.

For Sale 1/1970 Dated 15" Deep-Six Fuchs Wheels

I have a full set of Deep-6's for sale. These would be core wheels for restoration. They are straight, true and dont have any cracks. No major curb rash, but various dings and scrapes from 40+ years of use.

All four wheels are date stamped 1/70 and are the "heart" design. Can ship directly to the wheel restorer of your choice if so desired.

For Sale - '73 Euro Retractable Repa Seat Belts

Like the sports seats sold last week, these belt assy's came from a '73 E which was recently parted out. What makes them specific for a Euro market car is the single run of orange stitching running through the center of the belt webbing. These could be considered "correct" for a '73 Carrera RS.




The condition of this pair is best described as average. The webbing is clean and in very good condition. The male latches have some rust pitting on one side of the chrome tongue. The inertia reels work and retract as designed but I would probably remove the covers (small Phillips screws) and lubricate them for a slightly smoother action.
Includes the rear reel covers, all hardware and bolt covers. Sadly, the little white cloth part number tags are tattered beyond restoration, but this is the only significant let-down as far as condition goes.

'73 Porsche 911 Sports Seats

"Correct" for a '73 RS Carrera, this pair of sports seats was recently liberated from a destroyed '73 E Euro Sunroof Coupe.

The bolsters and perimeter material is the traditional black vinyl. The inserts were an unusual black nylon material that I have never seen before. They have faded to a shiny green color. The details suggest that this was the original upholstery. They could have been recovered...but it is my opinion that they have not and this is just one of those funky "euro delivery" things

The seats are complete with sliders and tilt brackets. The passenger side is a double-locker, but the drivers side - which has the notches in the track and bracket for the second lock- is only equipped with a single locker. Again, this was likely a case of the factory using what was available at the moment, as the notched bracket identifies it as a '73 plus the details and wear/tear seem to indicate a matched pair from new.

These are definitely "core" seats with tears in the upholstery, missing and incorrect screws in the hinge assy and multiple coats of cheap paint on the brackets and sliders. However, they do include the correct '73 peanut headrests as well as the correct seat belt receivers. A full restoration is in order, but well worth the effort as these are the Premier Seats in the early 911 world.

The 700 Mile '70S

A few years ago, I had the privilege of photographing Don Murray's amazing time warp silver '70S for Excellence Magazine. Silver paint, original leather upholstery....mmm...good! A truly untouched example and a terrific source of data for anyone restoring an early S.
Think about it - 700 miles. Essentially brand new. Yet this was a production car with the flaws that production cars have - drips in the paint, primer showing through the paint in the trunk, etc. Who will be brave enough  to document these flaws and restore their car in a truly accurate manner?

Lakester?

Porsche's, VW's and Nostalgia Lakesters? One of these things is not like the other...or is it?  Take a closer look at what is hiding in the back.  Flathead? Chrysler Hemi? Nope, a Harley Davidson V-Rod motor.  And who designed and developed the V-Rod?  Why Porsche of course! (yeah, its a stretch...but that's one of the "bennies" of having your own blog)

One of my regular stops when I am out and around the northern part of my city is Quality Machine, owned by Dave Pleasant and his two sons. Outstanding machinists,fabricators and hard-core hot rodders, "Quality" is the kind of place that you can walk in with a broken part and have it fixed by the time you head home for dinner.They narrow wheels for me and fab all kinds of cool stuff.

This is the latest project being built in a partnership with a customer. They are planning to run it at the upcoming ECTA "Ohio Mile" Speed Trials in Wilmington Ohio. The first event is scheduled for April 28-29 w' Hot Rod Magazine as a major sponsor. The goal is 160 mph in Wilmington and 200 at Bonneville!

'67 Cal-Look VW

Since we were talking about black VW Beetles, let me share mine. This is a car that I bought way back in '93 and spent about 5 years rebuilding into a Cal-Look car. Originally the 2276cc engine had a pair of Weber IDA carb's, but I began to get restless and in the mid 2000's I converted it over to turbo power. Best E.T. is a 10.84 @ 127mph.
Since then, all desire to race the car has gone away. Too many parts broken and too much time invested. Waaaay too much power for a street car! The car is mothballed right now - waiting to be converted back to the original IDA Webers and a more streetable tune.

VW Beetle vs. 996 GT3RS

My friend Steve aka "Kenny Rogers" putting a hurt on a GT3RS (actually, it looks like a 996 w' GT3 stripes, but nonetheless...)with his early Beetle.  All motor - no spray or turbo.

Single Bosch H1 Headlamp for Early 911

Single H1 with the raised logo Bosch. (indicative of original glass) Very nice adjuster screws. Small chip in the chrome near the attachment hole (invisible on the car)  Very nice piece.
